On Friday, Oct. 20, Auburn University’s new Department of Building Science Center was dedicated in honor of M. Miller Gorrie on his 71st birthday.

The facility was named after Gorrie, a 1957 Auburn graduate, who serves as Chairman and CEO of Birmingham’s Brasfield and Gorrie Construction Company.
Gorrie has donated the largest amount of money to Auburn to make this building possible. Donations were also taken from a number of local and state wide construction companies in the industry to contribute to the building.
Senior and Communications major from Birmingham, Alley Jackson, was invited to be a hostess to the dedication. Jackson accompanied one of her advisors, Ms. Tara Jones, who serves as the Development Coordinator for the College of Architecture, Design, and Construction here at Auburn.
Jackson also served as an assistant so she could gain experience in her field of study, communications. “I am interested in development, said Jackson. “I thought attending an event of a new building dedication would give me an experience that would teach me some things that I want to do for my major.
Jackson said the building is a state-of-the-art facility in the state of Alabama that will be used as a teaching tool for everyone who comes into the building.
“The three floors of the building and each room offer special designs and features to enhance the learning environment. The stairwells, ceilings, doorways, piping, and electrical engineering in the building are all exposed as a learning tool to students who are building science majors, said Jackson.
Jackson got the chance to meet some of Auburn’s greatest alums at the dedication. “My favorite thing about being at the dedication to Mr. Gorrie is that I was able to meet a number of incredible Auburn graduates who were all very proud and excited about the building, said Jackson.
“These graduates had also made a contribution to this building and through their contribution, they were passionate about enhancing one of Auburn’s programs for Auburn students.
Jackson also stated she enjoyed seeing the joy Gorrie and his family expressed. “Being at the ceremony showed to me how much Mr. Gorrie felt honored to be there amongst his employees and family members. It was great seeing his excitement about this new building, said Jackson.
The building will have an open house in the middle of November and will officially open for class to students at the beginning of January 2007 at the start of spring semester. Professor’s offices have already been moved to the building.
The new building is located on Goodwin Avenue next to Swingle Hall, and across the street from Auburn’s dormitories.
