AMA Conference

Laura Golden, a senior in marketing at Auburn University, attended the American Marketing Association’s collegiate conference this past Friday in Atlanta. Golden was given the chance to meet with some of Atlanta’s most prominent marketing companies. The conference gave Golden the opportunity to learn more about her major and future career.

Golden attended the conference because she is graduating in May and embraced the chance to launch her career. “It motivated me to really want to look for a job seriously, she said. Golden met with company executives within her industry to find out what companies were looking for in future employees. This allowed her to feel more confident going into her job search. “I feel better about finding a job because now I know what the industry is looking for, Golden said.

While the conference gave Golden the confidence to find a job, it also gave her the knowledge to decide the type of career she is looking for. Golden gained insight into a wide range of fields within marketing which helped her narrow down her interests. “I was able to see the areas of marketing I liked, and then the areas I didn’t like, she said. She was also able to learn more about advertising, a major Auburn doesn’t offer.

Golden heard several interesting speakers, but her favorites were from the Coca-Cola corporation and Motto magazine. The Coca-Cola speakers discussed a campaign they conducted between the television show “Lost and Sprite to create consumer awareness. “It just made me think about different creative ways to market a product, Golden said. The speaker from Motto magazine sparked her interest because he had a unique approach to business. He discussed the internal culture of his magazine without an emphasis on monetary sales. “He had a fresh look on ethics in the corporate world, Golden said.

Golden heard about the conference through an advertising major at Alabama. The American Marketing Association’s Auburn chapter was also promoting the event.

Above all else, the conference showed Golden the endless possibilities in marketing. She hasn’t yet decided where she will start her career, but now she is more determined than ever to find a job. “Now I know not only what they’re looking for, but what I’m looking for, so I feel more knowledgeable and confident, Golden said.
