Graduate, Then Start a Business
Don’t have a job? Don’t know where you want to work? Find something you enjoy and start a business. It worked for Jason Brown, owner of Amazing Lawn and Landscape, an Auburn based lawn-maintenance company.
Shortly after graduating from Auburn, Brown tried his hand at starting a business. ”I chose the landscaping field because I had previous experience in it and the type of work is challenging,” Brown said. ”And of course I really enjoy being outside. I am not the kind of person that can be cooped up in an office all day.”
Many college graduates feel that their age is working against them when it comes to starting a business. Brown said that this was not a factor for him. He believes that he was more eager and willing to learn about the business because of his young age.
Brown pointed out that it was hard starting a business out of college mainly for financial reasons. But he added that it can certainly be done as long as you are willing to do research to find out what type of resources are out there for your business. Brown recommends that someone looking to start a business should do plenty of research and know the different ways to get money to start a business. Brown said one option is going to the small business office at Auburn University and checking for small business grants. If you are going to the bank for a loan, it is very important to know exactly how much money you will need to start your business.
Depending on the type of industry you are interested in, it may be a good idea to get some work experience under someone before you decide to take off on your own. Fortunately for Brown, the landscaping industry is full of self-taught professionals. Brown was able to start his business after several years of working with another company.
