Independent Student Representative Happy with Position
Jarrod McLauchlin is a nice guy. He is in his last few semesters here at Auburn and has big plans after graduation. If you met him on the street, you would instantly feel like a close friend. Yet, when dealing with sororities and fraternities, McLauchlin has to wear a different hat.
As of last year, McLauchlin became a member of the “Committee of Fraternities and Sororities.” Here, he serves as an “independent student representative.”
As an independent student representative, McLauchlin has no affiliation with any Greek organization and represents the independent student body and the student government association. His main goal is to look after the best interest of each group.
This committee serves as a sort of disciplinary check up system. When problems arise within a fraternity or sorority, this committee has final say so.
They meet once a month, unless problems come up that need special attention and serve to the student’s best intentions. The committee deals mainly with disciplinary and monetary issues. “If there are problems within a certain Greek organization, we look at all the factors to see if a punishment is necessary. If we do decide that, we review our decisions and make sure they are adequate. Basically, we kind of keep the whole system in check.”
After feeling like being a part of an on-campus organization would make him feel more in touch with the university, McLauchlin decided to join the committee. “I think for someone like myself who is pretty busy, this committee is a really good place to be. It is a great entry-level position in case I wanted to move up in SGA but it also is just a good learning experience to keep up with Greek activities and what they do.”
