Jimmy Mayo::Tough Life of a Civil Engineering Major

Jimmy Mayo, 19, doesn’t look overly stressed if you were to see him walking to class but inside, his brain is quietly shaking with anxiety over the next class. Mayo, whose hometown is Auburn, will be a junior this fall in Civil Engineering. He offers some insight for those interested in majoring in engineering.

Core classes in engineering are pretty standard with students taking Calculus 1, 2 and 3 and Physics 1 and 2 before branching off into specific engineering fields. Mayo says his classes are very involved, and the homework is time consuming. In his summer classes, the homework takes about one hour per problem to complete. Sometimes he spends up to four hours a night solving assigned problems.

Mayo advises prospective engineering students to be dedicated to the major. Goofing off and skipping classes are sure ways to fall behind and fail out. Staying focused will earn a decent grade, even though Mayo says making an A in engineering is “impossibly hard.”

After graduation in 2009, he plans to go to Las Vegas to work for his uncle, also a civil engineer. He will stay with his uncle for the required four years before he can test for his engineering license. After that, the future is wide open for Mayo.
