The Plainsman Aims For Perfection
Since 1966, The Auburn Plainsman has been making a name for itself as being one of the best college newspapers in the nation. The Associated Collegiate Press has awarded The Plainsman over 23 Pacemaker Awards, the journalism equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize. Along with receiving several honorary awards and recognitions, The Plainsman strives to deliver current and reliable news and advertising to Auburn students.
Christopher West, Business Coordinator for The Plainsman, wants the strong reputation and popularity of the newspaper to continue. That is why he has been working with the PRCM 4510 Survey Research Methods class to expand on ideas that seem to be working and improve on those that are not.
The PRCM 4510 students will help develop a survey as a learning tool for effective research and survey questionnaires. Having The Plainsman as a real client in need of their help, the students will gain valuable insight and experience in conducting the survey.
Students will distribute the survey throughout various campus locations with questions concerning where students get their news, what section of the paper they read the most and where they would most likely pick up The Plainsman. The paper wants to know what sections (Campus, News, Intrigue and Sports) are being read the most in order to expand them with more valuable information.
This will help the paper determine what people read, how they get it, and where they read it. The survey will also help improve access to the paper and determine its current issues and advertising strategies.
This will also be a great way for students who are unfamiliar with the school paper to learn more about its locations, news, advertising and achievements.
The Plainsman not only aims to deliver accurate news to its students. It also gives students opportunities in hands-on journalistic experience. Because it’s a student produced paper, much of who is involved with it is of course the students.
The Plainsman does more than deliver news. It’s a stepping stone for future college newspapers. It has dedicated its time to providing information to the Auburn family. Isn’t it time we give back?
