Acceptance is Getting Tougher

A

s the year continues, it is getting harder and harder for incoming students to be accepted the first time around to Auburn.
Many students who desire to be a part of the Auburn family are getting hit with letters of disappointment because they did not get accepted the first time around.
It is not just Auburn either. Many colleges around the United States have begun to ask for higher SAT and ACT scores, more extracurricular activities and higher grades to be accepted. The most important demand…higher standardized testing scores.

From the time the current seniors were applying to Auburn to now, being accepted was not a hard thing to accomplish. In 2004, there were only 488 students put on the waiting list. The number of how many who were finally admitted that were on the waiting list; 336. Today, there are more incoming freshman applying and more of them are getting deferred than getting accepted, all because of their standardized testing scores.

I understand how important standardized tests can be, but that does not make up the entire intelligence of a student trying to get into a four-year college or university. It is unfair to be deferred because of a standardized test score. There are students who have a hard time taking tests anyway, especially when there is so much pressure on getting a better score than the person sitting next to you. May be the new upgrade for the university is to decrease the amount of students that will attend Auburn since the current population of Auburn students is the highest the university has ever seen. However, that still does not make it right to defer a student who has an amazing GPA and good extracurricular activities, but their SAT and ACT scores do not make the cut.

If you have not figured it out yet, I am seeing someone who I care about go through the stress and disappointment about not getting into a university that she has absolutely adored since she stepped onto the campus. She has all the potential in the
world and would be an amazing student here at Auburn. The only thing that is holding her back from being accepted is her standardized test scores. It is hard to see her go through this because I know how smart she is and determined about wanting to go to Auburn. She has two siblings already attending Auburn and wants to keep the tradition going in her family. I am not saying that the SAT and ACT are not important, I just don’t think it should be the main focus. Grades should be the main focus because that is what rounds up the student’s intelligence.

Standardized testing is always going to be a part of the admissions aspect to get into a good college or university. Acceptance is getting tougher for students, but don’t deny a student because of one test, that is just one part of the package. People need to look at the entire package and not one aspect of it because you never know who you are letting go because of one score.
