A Unique Fundraiser

A uburn participates in and sponsors many fund raising and community service events through out the year. Buzz around campus recently is about a Denim Drive taking place between October 16 and November 6. Many are curious as to what it is and what will be done with a collection of old denim. This drive is not what it looks like either. The old, worn denim will not be donated to those in need of clothing, but to a very different use.

The Denim Drive will collect all kinds of denim to donate to Cotton Incorporated. The denim will then be recycled and turned into environmentally safe insulation, UltraTouch. This fundraiser is sponsored by Emerging Leader Institute (ELI) a student organization here on Auburn’s campus. ELI provides freshman students with the tools and skills to become knowledgeable about themselves as well as the university and its opportunities. The students learn their personality type and leadership style through several self-assessment evaluations. Through gaining this knowledge as well as information on various clubs and organizations on campus, the students will be prepared to become leaders during their years at Auburn.
This unique fundraiser is a new, fresh and convenient way for students to give back while helping the environment. With environmental issues weighing a lot on people’s minds this fundraiser comes at a key time. Students are always looking for ways to give back and everyone has old, worn out jeans or jean jackets lying around.
UltraTouch is a unique and environmentally safe home insulation. Made of almost entirely natural denim and cotton fibers, it is recyclable thus reducing landfill waste. It takes a minimal amount of energy to manufacture compared to other types of insulation, aiding in energy conservation and the reduction of pollution. Named one of the top 100 products by Architectural Products in 2006, this product has proved to be useful and a key proponent in saving the environment.
ELI’s goal is to collect 1,000 pieces of denim to donate to Cotton Inc. Once manufactured into insulation it will be donated to Habitat for Humanity groups in the Gulf Coast area to help build new homes.
Emerging Leader Institute is not only taking a proactive step towards helping those in need of homes, but is also helping the environment in a unique way.
