Paper and Pulp on the Plains

A uburn University is well-known for many things. Football, outstanding academic programs, and Toomer’s Lemonade are just a few thoughts that come to mind. However, has anyone recognized the individual professors and scholars that run the college? Left and right, professors and instructors are winning various awards for their academic achievements.

Professor Harry T. Cullinan is no different. A professor in Auburn University’s Department of Chemical Engineering, Cullinan has outshined his colleagues with his extensive research into paper and pulp and has worked to implement better tactics in utilizing underused forest materials. Recently, Cullinan was inducted into the Paper Industry International Hall of Fame for all of his time and hard work.

Having been at Auburn University since 1991, Cullinan received his doctorate from Carnegie Institute of Technology for chemical engineering. After graduating, he began work at the Institute of Paper Chemistry in Appleton, Wis., where the ceremony was held.

“I started my career in Appleton years ago, so it is thrilling to go back to Wisconsin to receive this award, said Cullinan. “It’s like the Cooperstown of the paper industry.

Since beginning his research, Cullinan has been involved in several initiatives and alliances for the better consumption of paper and wood products. He is the founder of the National Network for Pulp and Paper Technology Training and the founder and president of the Pulp and Paper Education and Research Alliance. Also a part of the Agenda 2020 Technology Alliance, Cullinan was vital in the alliance’s establishment. The Agenda 2020 Technology Alliance partners with the government in working toward reinventing the forestry industry.

“This is a significant honor not only for me, but for Auburn University as well, said Cullinan. “It is important that Auburn and its researchers are being recognized as world leaders in the pulp and paper industry.

Cullinan has been published nearly 70 times since starting his research and has been honored with several distinguished awards for his excellence in research and service to the community. He is one of several Auburn University professors who work toward making the world a better one to live in, as well as developing new and improved ways to conserve energy and resources. Auburn University should be proud to have such remarkable citizens working under its roof.
