Playing at School
Coral Blanche is a senior at Auburn University with a major that not many people are aware of. If you have ever appreciated the design of a product, such as your new cell phone, video camera, furniture, car or even playground equipment, then you are admiring the work of industrial design.
Industrial Design is a major within the College of Architecture, Construction and Design. It is a rigorous four-year program that offers students numerous opportunities. In its most basic description, it is how people learn to design consumer and specialty products.
Blanche is currently in her fourth year of study in industrial design. She survived the intense summer program and then had the opportunity to spend a semester studying abroad in Ireland. Blanche recently took advantage of another opportunity her program offers by attending the national conference in San Francisco. At this conference she was able to hear famous designers speak and exchange business cards for them. Attending the conference was a great way to for Blanche to meet new people and help build her own portfolio.
In studio Blanche is designing for the company, PlayCore, which is the largest manufacturer of playground equipment and is headquartered in Fort Payne, Ala. “It’s a lot of fun because we get to play at school everyday,” said Blanche.
With graduation right around the corner, Blanche is putting together a portfolio from which she will present her ideas and work from the past several years. Blanche is hoping that the contacts she made at the conference will facilitate the inevitable job-hunt.
