Auburn Professor Helping Veterans

A uburn University has numerous professors conducting groundbreaking and innovative research everyday. From the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering to the College of Veterinary Medicine research plays a prominent role. One college in particular that is taking many strides to improve and grow their field is the College of Education.
Professors throughout the college are constantly researching and advancing the field of education. One professor in particular, David DiRamio, is conducting important and helpful research. DiRamio is an assistant professor of adult and higher education in the College of Education. He joined the faculty in 2005 and in his short time here has contributed a great deal to the university.

As a navy veteran who served for six years and then decided to attend college for the first, DiRamio has personal ties to his area of research. He feels that veterans returning home and attending college many times need assistance and encouragement to adapt to their new environment. He personally struggled to adapt after being in the navy and living a certain lifestyle for so long.
This research comes at a key time in our society. Thousands of veterans will be enrolling in college in the coming years and DiRamio feels that they need special attention. As part of his research for an article “From Combat to Campus: Voices of Student Veterans he conducted interviews on three campuses. This gave him an inside look at the needs of veterans while attending college. He heard first hand the veteran’s thoughts on how universities can assist and help them.
DiRamio also participates in many other areas of education. He serves as the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators’ liaison for an American Council on Education initiative “Severely Injured Military Veterans: Fulfilling their Dream. He is trying to help aid the transition of disabled veterans into college. Attending college after war is not easy for these men and women, especially when they have endured an injury.
DiRamio is also bringing attention to the College of Education here at Auburn by receiving a prestigious award last year. His 200 page dissertation won him the 2006 Melvene D. Hardee Dissertation of the Year Award presented by the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators.
This professor’s efforts will help many people from different walks of life. With the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, many veterans will soon be attending college. By universities recognizing this need these men and women will get the support they deserve and may require.
