Enhancing the Safety on Campus
The tragedy of Virgina Tech last April shook up many college campuses about the fear of campus violence coming on to its campuses. Many colleges have begun setting up new safety systems that will notify every individual about any type of danger that may be taken place on the campus. Auburn has become a new addition to the colleges that are wanting to maintain and
enhance the safety on its campus.
The new system is called AU Alert. It is the university’s effort to improve campus safety in the event if an emergency were ever to happen on campus. Individuals will be notified on different levels of crises; ranging from severe weather about to hit Auburn to campus violence and the action of the campus being closed down. The system focuses on sending either a text message or a personal voice message to its users to alert the participants of any danger that could be occurring. The messages will be sent to an individuals’ cell phone, home phone, auburn e-mail address and a secondary e-mail address to ensure that there are many different ways the individuals can receive the information they would need to know. It is to show that any contact the individual gives to AU Alert, it will contact it as soon as possible.
The AU Alert will provide critical information if ever an event should take place on campus. The campus safety officials are urging students, faculty and staff to sign up for AU Alert. The main focus is to keep everyone notified about anything that is happening. Although campus officials are not forcing people to sign up, it is highly recommended.
If you have an Auburn e-mail address, you will still receive information about if there is any type of situation happening. However, if you are registered in AU Alert, you will receive the campus e-mail along with the text or voice message on your phones informing you so you know what is happening if you can not get to a computer quick enough.
The new safety system lets the entire Auburn University community feel safe and that the university safety officials are taking every precaution they can to make sure nothing tragic happens to the students and faculty that make up Auburn. With this new safety method, people will always feel like they know what is happening and what they need to do to stay out of harm’s way. It will also minimize the feeling of panic which only worsens a crisis. It is a positive addition to Auburn and everyone should want to register for AU Alert because you never know what can happen and it is good to be in the know when a crisis could occur.
