Taking Strides To Help Lives
Each year a parent receives the bad news that their child has been diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. Unfortunately, staying in “good spiritsâ€? and a constant delivery of flowers and toys to a hospital room is not enough to make a child forget why they are there in the first place. Make-A-Wish Foundation tries to bring children’s dreams outside the hospital roomand into the real world.                                                                     Â
Auburn residents and Auburn University students have also been making strides towards granting wishes with a one mile walk in Town Creek Park on Gay Street. Last year, Chi Omega sorority was able to raise more than $38,000 in donations with help from Auburn residents.            Â
This year, the walk will take place on Nov.4 with a proposed goal of reaching $50,000 in donations. Along with live music and a tent with refreshments and snacks there will be a raffle giving away anything from shoes to Kavu purses from Kinnucan’s and Spa Auburn gift certificates.Â
Sorority members distribute walker registration forms and t-shirts to encourage friends, family and potential sponsors to participate in the event.
A child who had a wish granted by the foundation makes an appearance and tells stories about his of her illnesses, wishes and experiences.
“It’s a great opportunity to participate in an event that grants children wishes that they once never thought they would have, said Libby Hill, former participant for Walk for a Wish.
Donations are given to the Georgia and Alabama branch of Make-A-Wish Foundation and participants are advised of the children affected from their donations.
“I know that I would want someone to walk for me if I was sick, said Hill.
If you find yourself laying around on a Sunday afternoon you should head over to Town Creek Park for prizes, exercise and a good cause.
