It’s A Family Tradition….

W

hile fall semester is filled with a frenzy of football fans cheering for the Tigers and tailgaters competing for the best hot dogs, Auburn University faculty, staff, alumni and students never seem to forget what drew them to the university in the first place, the term “The Auburn Family.

It may sound cliché’ to some universities, but Auburn owns up to its reputation of being a unified family for Auburn locals and students alike.
Just this past Friday on Nov.2 UPC held a Tiger Nights event on campus for alumni, students, faculty and the general public.  The event had a “Winter Magic theme and presented performers such as Corey Smith, a singer/songwriter, and Jason Michaels, a magician.  While performers seemed to attract an older crowd of primarily students there were still plenty of activities for younger children including an inflatable slide.
Along with Tiger Nights, UPC, SGA and the Office of the President will also present the Annual Holiday Celebration on Samford Lawn.  As all students know, November and December are hectic months of rushing to finish term papers, projects and studying for finals.  The Holiday Celebration is meant to make everyone stop for a moment, join together and think about what’s really important…family.
After the Auburn Chamber of Commerce presents its Christmas parade, the AU Singers and Concert Choir sing carols during the lighting of the Christmas tree and a candle that symbolizes unity.  This year’s celebration, which will take place on Nov. 29, invites all to attend and celebrate not only the spirit of the holiday, but also the spirit of the Auburn Family.
And let’s not forget the inevitable “war eagle chant pronounced wherever and whenever you see an Auburn fan.
“I was in Scotland two summers ago when a man in an Auburn shirt yelled War Eagle to me…you just don’t get that kind of welcoming anywhere else, said Lucy Anderson, a senior at Auburn.
For Auburn, it’s not enough to say it’s in the top 50 best public schools in the U.S. or that it has a good football team or that it is the epitome of southern charm.  Auburn aims for something more, to provide students with a home away from home and to remind faculty, staff and alumni why they are at Auburn.
