“It Begins at Auburn” Gets a Boost

O n February 3, 2006, Auburn University launched a campaign to raise scholarship money for its nearly 25,000 students. “It begins at Auburn, is the largest fundraiser ever started at Auburn University with an initial goal of $500 million. In July 2007, Auburn University surpassed this goal, nine months before expected.

Recently, Bailey-Harris Construction Company made an endowment of $250,000 to the Department of Building Science in the College of Architecture, Design and Construction. CADC has raised nearly $23 million alone despite its original goal of $20 million. The endowment was established for a presidential scholarship.

“We are tremendously appreciative to Bailey-Harris for their most recent and very generous gift to our Department of Building Science scholarship program, CADC Dean Dan Bennett said. “We are particularly pleased that they have decided to make an endowment gift, as that decision ensures that the scholarship will serve deserving students for generations to come.

Juniors and seniors in the Department of Building Science with a GPA of 3.0 or better are eligible to receive the scholarship that can be applied to an undergraduate or graduate degree.

Bailey-Harris Construction Company was formed in 1979 by two Auburn graduates, Jack Bailey and Allen Harris. Based in Auburn, the company has made several contributions to Auburn University including those to the M. Miller Gorrie Center for Building Science and the Bob Aderholdt Endowed Professorship.

“Many of us at Bailey-Harris have been fortunate to experience firsthand the life-changing milestone of an Auburn Building Science degree, said Kelly Pennington, vice president of Bailey-Harris Construction. “Both as individuals and as a company we are tremendously thankful for the opportunities that this first-class education has provided us and we are proud to be able to assist in bringing this experience to others.

Currently, “It begins at Auburn has raised over $540 million. There are several methods of giving to the campaign including online contributions, stock, real estate, and endowments, among others. Any and all donations, no matter the size, are appreciated. With scholarships, donations will also be used for facilities, research, equipment, and outreach.
