The One Campaign
FOriginally funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the One campaign is a charitable organization that seeks to raise hunger awareness and support to end the fight against it. With the title signifying its beliefs, this campaign strives to get people of all different beliefs, backgrounds, and lifestyles together as One to fight the war on hunger. The followers of this campaign believe that the U.S. government should allocate more its budget toward helping meet the basic needs of those in poverty stricken countries around the world. The campaign is open to anyone. Although ending world hunger may seem like a long stretch, but members believe that it can be accomplished as One.
The issues that this campaign seeks to resolve are extensive, covering multiple topics that desperately need to be addressed. For example, a major issue is the prevalence of AIDS, malaria, and Tuberculosis in poverty stricken countries. More than 38 million people worldwide are affected with AIDS. If the disease is not treated, it leads to death early in life. This severely affects families because men, women, and children are all needed for duties such as raising crops, teaching school, and caring for the sick. Another serious issue in such countries is the lack of education. This problem really is the root of poverty; thus, the lack of it creates a continuous poverty cycle. Equipping the young with tools for a productive life, education offers vast health and economic growth. By 2015, members want to establish a system for universal primary education. In addition to these issues, the lack of food in these countries continues to take lives daily. According to statistics, one in seven people go to bed hungry every night. This campaign not only seeks to donate food, but also to help farmers grow better crops and countries to build farm-to-market roads to supply the far off cities.
All these issues and more are why people on every campus should get involved in this campaign. Signing up is easy and free. Join the One voice and help end hunger around the world.
