Throw Away Your Scales?

A

uburn University Body Image Education and Eating Disorders Awareness is getting ready for a big week. November 5-11 will be the “Throw Away the Scales Week”.  AUBIE EDA is encouraging students and staff to become less weight conscious and throw away their scales.
AUBIE EDA is a student organization set up to promote better awareness and understanding of body image issues and eating disorders on campus and in the East Alabama area. This organization was based off another similar organization called F.L.Y. at the University of Georgia
The group advocates that no one should need to check his or her weight frequently, unless in the presence of a medical professional. “Throw Away the Scales Week” will serve to distribute information on when scales should be used and why a personal scale should be thrown away.
AUBIE EDA is placing special trashcans across campus to collect scales. For every scale received, AUBIE EDA will receive a pledge from local businesses. The person throwing the scale away can attach his or her contact details for the chance to win a special prize. All scales received will be donated to the Red Cross and other charities.
AUBIE EDA marked trash cans will be located on The Hill in Burton Hall, the Quad Center mail room, Foy Union, select sorority chapter rooms and a number of other locations across campus. For full details of the event and drop-off location updates, see www.auburn.edu/aubieeda.
Dr. Annetee S. Kluck is the AUBIE EDA faculty advisor. Her goal is to help build an organization that will inspire new thinking and understanding of these issues at Auburn and bring about new leadership for our long-term goals at Auburn.
AUBIE EDA plans to achieve these objectives through educational programming for all students, a sorority intervention program, informational campaigns, screening documentaries and organizing Auburn’s biggest ever Eating Disorders Awareness Week. AUBIE EDA will also advocate for better treatment services for those with eating disorders in the university community and throughout East Alabama.
AUBIE EDA is looking for more members to add to their organization. Everyone is strongly encouraged to join and to get involved with AUBIE EDA. Their site has a “Get Involved section for more information for potential members.
