A Midsummer Night’s Dream AU Style
You do not want to miss the second offering of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream from the Auburn University Department of Theatre. This is a time-less tale with a new twist.Â
This popular comedy involves two pairs of Athenian lovers that try to resolve a romantic quandary by disappearing into the woods only to turn into playthings of a group of fairies who are having their own romantic challenges.Â
It will be your classic Midsummer Night’s Dream with a spin. The script has been edited to include songs from artists such as Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatra and Johnny Cash.Â
The production will be running from November 8-11 and November 13-16. The performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. with a matinee starting at 2 p.m. on Sunday.Â
The A.U. Theatre Assistant Professor, Chris Qualls, is the director of this production.Â
In an article on the AU Theatre Web site, Qualls said “The students are having a blast with it. Shakespeare is one of the greatest lyrical poets in the English language (or any language), but he was also a consummate entertainer. He was part- owner of a theatre and wrote his plays for the paying public, unashamed of embracing the pop culture of his time. Perhaps Frank Sinatra himself might have sung in Shakespeare’s shows had the two been contemporaries. One of the great joys in experiencing the play is how easy it is to recognize our most foolish selves in Shakespeare’s characters, and to revel in their outrageous follies.
The retirement of Lynn Lockrow will be celebrated during this time with a display of his design work in the Telfair Peet Theatre art gallery.Â
