The Freshman Class Queen
The glitz, the glam, the competition. Platforms have been polished, talents have been rehearsed, and the evening gown is ready to wear. Auburn offers four pageants a year, but this is the only one made entirely for ladies of the freshman class.
The annual Miss Fall Rush pageant will be held Thursday, November 29, 2007.
Miss Fall Rush has been a part of my life at Auburn University every year during my college career. As a freshman, I competed with 15 amazing girls and was humbled to be chosen as Miss Fall Rush in 2004. I have since then served as the Master of Ceremony for the past two years and will for my last time on November 29th.
It is truly a wonderful way to extend yourself beyond your own sorority. As a freshman with a greek affiliation, girls spend countless hours with their pledge sisters through meetings, study hours, philanthropy events, campus events, flag football, and more. However, Miss Fall Rush is a unique opportunity to make friends with girls from different sororities, different backgrounds and different interests.
I have become great friends with several of the girls that competed in 2004. I have had numerous classes with a number of of the girls and one is going to be a bridesmaid in my wedding this summer!
An interesting detail about Miss Fall Rush is that it is not a typical pageant. It is a philanthropy event for the March of Dimes. In fact, it is the longest running philanthropy at Auburn University, dating back to 1963.
And guess what… the pageant is put on by a fraternity! Every year, the boys of Delta Sigma Phi pull together to put on this amazing production. They direct, escort, make props, cut music, sell tickets, make programs and more! As interesting as it can be to watch a group of college boys put on a pageant, they truly do a great job.
Matt Reynolds, this year’s Delta Sigma Phi President said, “We normally donate around $2,000 to the March of Dimes every year, however, last year we donated $2,500 and we are hoping to raise $3,000 this year.
Reynolds also said that through their fraternity’s continuous contributions to the March of Dimes, they have a permanent seat on their Board of Directors.
The theme this year is “Parrot Head and will consist of music by Jimmy Buffet. Each contestant will compete in four categories. The day of the pageant, each girl will have a 10 minute interview. Each girl must also have a platform, or a cause they feel passionate about and one they have worked to improve.
The on stage portion of the competition consists of campus wear, talent and evening gown. During the evening gown segment, each girl will be asked two on stage questions, one about her specific platform and one random question.
So as you can plainly see, these girls are talented, smart, socially aware of current events locally and nationally and pull it all off with great poise and grace.
It is an exciting and nerve racking experience and only time will tell who the 2007 freshman queen will be!
