Last Day for Beat Bama Food Drive

Tomorrow, November 15, is the last day of the Beat Bama Food Drive. Kickoff started October 15, in front of Samford Hall. Auburn has won 8 out of the past 12 food drives, and the event continues to grow. Last year Auburn collected more than 172,400 pounds of food.

The score as of November 13, is Auburn University: 37,302 and University of Alabama: 6,527.

If you are on campus and want to drop of donations, visit the Auburn Student Government Association in the Foy Student Union. You can also drop off donations at the East Alabama Food Bank on 375 Industry Drive. If you need someone to pick it up for you, call the AU SGA office at (334)844-4240. For larger loads call the East Alabama Food Bank at (334)821-9006.

Auburn University Public Relations Counsel of Alabama (AUPRCA) got involved this year by painting donation boxes and placing them at designated areas around campus. Any campus organization can get involved in the food drive. You can also submit monetary and non-perishable food donations. Alabama’s state funding cuts will cause more to depend on the donated food. Donations are down by 50 percent, and need for donations has increased 27 percent. It is estimated that 1 in 5 food pantries in America are having to turn away the hungry because a lack of supplies. Urgency is added due to the upcoming holiday season.

The donated food is channeled to the homeless, the mentality ill, disaster victims, mission and rehab centers, Welfare to work families, low income day care and senior centers and emergency food pantries.
