More Than Football

At Auburn University, we put a lot of emphasis on football. That’s not necessarily a problem; I love football as much as the next person. I would, however, like to encourage you to pay a little more attention to the other sports Auburn this spring.

There is one sport that I am particularly passionate about and could really use some support from the Auburn Family. That sport is wrestling. Unfortunately, due to the Title IX act, wrestling can no longer be considered an Auburn University Athletic. They are, however, a club sport and very active in the NCAA tournaments that take place all over the country, including the SEC Championship and the National Championship.

The dedicated wrestlers practice Monday through Thursday every week and have competed in two tournaments already this season. Their next tournament is the University of Central Florida Open and is this Saturday. They could really use your support this weekend and especially in the spring semester when tournaments are more frequent and more competitive.

Another Auburn sport you should be looking out for is the Swimming and Diving Teams. How many National Championships do they need to win before they get the support they deserve from the Auburn student body?

Both the men’s and women’s teams placed first in the SEC and National Championships last year and several years prior. They are looking forward to their season home openers tomorrow afternoon.

Tomorrow’s meet guarantees to be an exciting one as it is against our biggest rival, Alabama. The meet will be held at the James E. Martin Aquatic Center and is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. If you are still in Auburn, I strongly encourage you to attend.

I hope that once you return from your long-awaited holiday break, that you enjoy what’s left of football season to the fullest. But when the tailgaters go home, I hope that you remember the other student athletes that sweat orange and blue every day to represent Auburn University to the best of their ability. There are countless other athletics on campus that I am not mentioning here, but I am sure they would all love to see your posters and shakers at their next home meets.
