Thanksgiving Plans Altered By Iron Bowl
For many students at Auburn, the thanksgiving holiday will end sooner than normal this year. That is because the University of Alabama and Auburn will wage their annual battle the Saturday after thanksgiving this year. Many students who live far away from Auburn’s campus are leaving the day after thanksgiving to make it back to town on time.
“I know I want to be here on Friday,” Auburn Senior Michael Griffin, a Texas native said. “It is going to be an interesting atmosphere here, with most people coming in the friday after thanksgiving and on gameday itself.”
Most Auburn students are used to seeing RV’s parked in the fields on Donahue well before Saturdays. The new time for the game will mean that many tailgaters won’t be back in town until the day of the game.
ESPN has picked up the game and decided to show it at7 p.m., which will give people plenty of time to get back into town. Still, the change is a welcome one, considering that it gives Auburn a week off before the biggest game of the year.
“I am just ready to have another home football game,” Griffin said. “I know it means I will have to drive 12 hours and get into gameday mood in just two days, but I think it is worth it.”
The change also makes the Iron Bowl one of the biggest games of the week, considering it no longer shares a day with Michigan-Ohio State. In my opinion, the Iron Bowl will now be given the national attention it deserves. I know I will be driving back Friday morning so that I will have plenty of time to get into the gameday mood.
Auburn haschanged the normal gameday protocol this week. Some of those changes include the fact that no one is allowed to reserve tailgating spots until 6 a.m. Friday morning. Also, RV’s are allowed in town starting Wednesday, but the are limited to the hayfields on South Donahue Drive and Woodfield Drive.
