History of the Auburn ‘War Eagle’ Fight Song

One of the most engaging aspects of the Auburn experience is the ceremonial singing of the Auburn ‘War Eagle’, which has been a school tradition since 1955.

The ‘War Eagle’ fight song was written by Robert Allen (composer) and Al Stillman (lyrics). Roy B. Sewell commissioned the song in 1953 as part of an attempt to motivate football coach ‘Shug’ Jordan’s up and coming football team. The thought behind the initiative was to usher in a new era of success for Auburn athletics’ by capturing the spirit of the Auburn fans through the Auburn fight song.

Officially the naming rights of the Auburn ‘War Eagle’ fight song jointly belong to Auburn University and the late Roy B. Sewell of the Sewell family. According to the Sewell family, Roy B. Sewell also helped compose the last few lines of lyrics, and the family still has the parchment roll with the handwritten changes along with the rights to the song in their possession.

Today, on behalf of the Sewell family heirs here is Harris Sewell Worley, a fourth generation Auburn Alumni and direct descendant of the Sewell family, with a direct account of the history of the Auburn ‘War Eagle’ fight song.

Auburn Student Gains Professional Experience with the University

Elizabeth Gray landed more than she bargained for with her internship in Auburns University’s Office of Development. Gray, a senior majoring in Communication, began the internship in August and has since acquired useful knowledge and professional skills from her experience that will prove to be beneficial to her in her future career.

Although Gray has already learned so much from every aspect of her position, there is one particular job responsibility that has allowed her to take advantage of many opportunities. Gray has had the chance to become very involved with the office’s “It Begins at Auburn” campaign. The goal of the campaign is to raise money for the university’s colleges, schools and departments. There are 18 different constituencies the university will appropriate funds to and each one has its own goals for which program the funding will be redistributed.

Gray’s position specially focuses on working with the major gifts or large sums of money being donated to the office. Her job is to advocate for the donors and make sure the money they are donating is being allocated to the programs they care about. The majority of Gray’s daily job responsibilities deal with donor relations, such as contacting the donors, writing agreements for endowments, and in general building good relationships between them and the university.

Gray is grateful for her internship and enjoys every aspect of her position. Since she began working for this office, she has decided to pursue a career in development upon graduation in May.

Technology Seminar by Auburn Alumni Shed Light on New Media

Three Auburn alumni gave a presentation at 10 a.m. in Thach Hall on using technology in journalism. Jim Alfred ‘98, Shayne Bowman ‘91 and Dan Doughtie ‘77 evaluated the technology courses offered in the Department of Communication and Journalism. Topics discussed included social media elements such as blogging and using multimedia to draw viewers to Web sites.

Dr. Jennifer Adams put together the panel to help students understand where the journalism industry was heading and what the industry had to say about today’s graduates with journalism and communication degrees. Doughtie, business analyst for Morris Technology Services, said that the Fourth Estate has become the Fourth Dimension. In other words, print journalism is going to be replaced by the Internet.
