More Than Football

At Auburn University, we put a lot of emphasis on football. That’s not necessarily a problem; I love football as much as the next person. I would, however, like to encourage you to pay a little more attention to the other sports Auburn this spring. (more…)

Virginia Dawson Mat Cat President

Mat Cats is a wrestling hostess organization on campus at Auburn University. It began in 2001 and now is a prominent organization on campus with more than 20 members.

Mat Cats are responsible for assisting the wrestling club in raising funds, providing basic first aid, helping the wrestlers with general things and running tournaments. In order to run a tournament Mat Cats must keep score, keep ride time, and maintain the clock. Mat Cats spend the Spring semester traveling to tournaments, SEC’s and Nationals. The Wrestling team at Auburn University is a part of the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA). They have placed in the top 15 three out of the past four years.

This organization allows members to get involved with wrestling at Auburn. Mat Cats also allows members to make several connections with a variety of people on campus. The hostesses are a diverse group comprised of various backgrounds, majors, and interests.

Virginia Dawson is a senior in Psychology at Auburn University and she serves as the current Mat Cat President. She got involved with Mat Cats because she had always loved wrestling and wanted to continue being around this support. “Not everyone, however, knows about wrestling when they start. It doesn’t matter though because it’s more about the fun and friendships. The best part about Mat Cats is the fact that we are one big family. The guys and girls become really close. A large chunk of my social network is Mat Cat/Wrestling people. I hang out with them on the weekends, and I keep up with their daily lives. Mat Cats has been a big part of my college career, and I’ve really loved the friends I’ve made,â€? said Virginia.

Ride or Die

The Auburn cycling team, the Flyers, was re-established on campus in 2001. Bill Fiser, a senior in software engineering, became a member of the Flyers last year. He had previously cycled and was interested in becoming involved with the cycling club at Auburn.

The flyers are dedicated to their sport. Practices are three times a week at 6 am! Three times a week isn’t enough according to Fiser. “To keep up and compete in races, you pretty much have to ride everyday,” he says. Fiser would know because he place second  in the Florida State University Criterium and FSU Time Trial.  He also finished in the top 10 overall in his category last season in the Southeastern Collegiate Cycling Conference.

The Auburn Flyers also had two members qualify for nationals last season and are coached by Chad Rodekohr.  With members so dedicated, the flyers are sure to keep cycling towards success!

Come Sail Away with The Auburn Sailing Club

The Auburn Sailing Club is a club sport at Auburn University.

The club has a faculty adviser, but the students do primarily everything for the club. There are generally about 20 members. Some examples of other club sports here at Auburn are cycling, rowing and rugby. To be a member of The Auburn Sailing Club you have to be an Auburn University student, sign an insurance waiver and pay dues every semester.

David Clark, a senior in biomedical sciences, is the commodore (president) of this club. Clark said, “I taught myself to sail from reading a book. I have been sailing for about five years now. I first learned to sail on a Prindle 16 in Wolf Bay and around Pirate’s Cove when I was sixteen. I now share the love of sailing with my dad. Now he loves the hobby as much as I do. I have been a part of the Auburn Sailing Club for about two years.
