Looking to Get Involved? Try UPC

Michelle Murphy, Auburn University’s UPC advisor, took some time to talk about what is going on in UPC. Currently, UPC is looking for members of the council as well as committee members.

For those of you who are not familiar with the Auburn University Program Council, this organization does it all! UPC organizes events ranging from movies to major concerts to workshops, lectures and comedians! And what makes UPC so unique is that it is completely planned and produced by Auburn students for Auburn Students.

Applications for council members will be due March 12. There will also be three interest meetings for those who would like to know more details. They will be held March 4 at 3:30 and March 5 at 4:00 and 7:00.

She Was Born an Auburn Tiger!

Brittney Guthrie is a junior at Auburn majoring in Human Development and Family Studies. Brittney has been an Auburn fan since birth. Her mom even brought her home from the hospital in a dress with the Auburn University logo embroidered on it!

Brittney says her favorite Auburn tradition is rolling Toomer’s Corner. She has rolled Toomer’s Corner after every home game she has gone to since she was two years old. When asked if she thinks rolling Toomer’s Corner is more of an alumni and family tradition, Brittney says not at all!

Watch the video below where Brittney describes her favorite Auburn tradition.

RecycleMania Competition For Students

RecycleMania, a competition between 400 universities in the nation, is now here at Auburn. The competition held a kickoff event on Cater Lawn this past Wednesday. Its goal is to spread recognition about how easy and useful recycling is, especially on our college campus.

The Recycling/Solid Waste Coordinator, Donny Addison, says another goal of RecycleMania is to make people think twice before throwing something away when they could easily recycle it instead.

You may have noticed more recycling bins around campus lately. Addison explained that this initiative was helped by Coca-Cola. The company donated many bins to various buildings on campus.

The recent recycling rate among Auburn students is 1.27 pounds per person. Although this number is larger than it has been in the past, there is still a long way to go to make a world of a difference.

Not only is RecycleMania a competition between the universities who are part of the Southeastern Conference, but there is an on-campus competition at Auburn, too. Different campus residences are recycling to win in a battle of their own. Addison explained that the total amount of recycling will be counted at the end and the winner will receive a party brought to their door.

Watch the video as Donny explains what the winner can expect to get.

The Big Event to be a Big Success

The Big Event is taking place this Saturday, February 16th in Auburn and its surrounding communities. Since 2003, the Student Government Association has hosted this opportunity for students which they modeled after Texas A&M’s large community service project.

The goal for this year is to get 1,000 students involved in at least 50 projects. The Director of The Big Event, Trey Mann, is hopeful that this will be the biggest turnout for Auburn students yet.

Some of the projects students have done in the past through this opportunity include working for Habitat for Humanity, the Boys & Girls’ Club, the foodbank, Storybrook Farms and Camp ASCCA.

This “thank you” day offers a chance for students to give back to the community that has given them so much while furthering their education. If you’re interested, visit SGA’s Web site at www.auburn/edu/sga or contact the SGA Office at 844-4240.

More Than Football

At Auburn University, we put a lot of emphasis on football. That’s not necessarily a problem; I love football as much as the next person. I would, however, like to encourage you to pay a little more attention to the other sports Auburn this spring. (more…)
