One Small Step for Man, One Giant Leap for AUSSP

Auburn University is often jokingly called a cow college because of its extensive roots in agriculture. Not many people know that Auburn’s physics and engineering departments are highly acclaimed by NASA and other space engineering organizations. One campus group that is making quite a name for itself is the Auburn University Student Space Program (AUSSP).

The organization is funded by a NASA grant is recognized by space engineering organizations such as NASA and Boeing as a “premier student-led space organization.” (more…)

It All Adds Up

What is the first thing you think of when you hear the word math? I can almost bet you’re not thinking fun or interesting.

Auburn University’s Dr. Marilyn Strutchens is trying to change that. She has developed a project called “Enhancing Qualitative Understanding in Teachers and Youth via Problem Solving,â€? or EQUITY via Problem Solving, for short. The goal of the project is to create a fun way to teach and learn mathematics. (more…)

AU Helps Deep South Plants Go Digital

You might not know it, but you live The East Gulf Coast Plain region, one of the nation’s hotspots for biodiversity and species endangerment. It is also one of the least documented. Fortunately, Auburn University’s College of Sciences and Mathematics, with the help of Florida State University, Troy University, the University of South Alabama and the University of Southern Mississippi, students and scientists everywhere will be able to access high-resolution digital images of plant specimens found in the East Gulf Coastal Plain.

The Deep South Plant Specimen Project kicked off in spring of 2007 with a $200,000 grant from the National Science Foundation. (more…)

Microscope Developed at Auburn Makes Big Splash

Amicroscope developed by Auburn University has been selected for a Nano 50 Award. The awards is selected by NASA Tech Briefs publishers and recognizes the most exceptional new products in the nanotechnology field. This award is a huge step for Auburn, because it gives it the recognition as one of the leading research institutions in the field.

The microscope was designed by Vitaly Vodyanoy and then was licensed by a company called CytoViva (www.cytoviva.com). The company took the design and developed it further. (more…)

Ashley Beard :: Auburn Graduate

Ashley Beard is originally from Auburn. She graduated in May 2007, a year early, with a degree in biomedical science from Auburn University. She isn’t exactly sure what she wants to do next.

Next week she has an interview in Birmingham for a pharmaceutical representative job at Pfizer. If she doesn’t get that job she is going to start taking graduate classes in the fall toward a master’s degree in immunology.

Ultimately she would like to do research or teach at a university, preferably Auburn University.
