RecycleMania Competition For Students

RecycleMania, a competition between 400 universities in the nation, is now here at Auburn. The competition held a kickoff event on Cater Lawn this past Wednesday. Its goal is to spread recognition about how easy and useful recycling is, especially on our college campus.

The Recycling/Solid Waste Coordinator, Donny Addison, says another goal of RecycleMania is to make people think twice before throwing something away when they could easily recycle it instead.

You may have noticed more recycling bins around campus lately. Addison explained that this initiative was helped by Coca-Cola. The company donated many bins to various buildings on campus.

The recent recycling rate among Auburn students is 1.27 pounds per person. Although this number is larger than it has been in the past, there is still a long way to go to make a world of a difference.

Not only is RecycleMania a competition between the universities who are part of the Southeastern Conference, but there is an on-campus competition at Auburn, too. Different campus residences are recycling to win in a battle of their own. Addison explained that the total amount of recycling will be counted at the end and the winner will receive a party brought to their door.

Watch the video as Donny explains what the winner can expect to get.

A Unique Fundraiser

A uburn participates in and sponsors many fund raising and community service events through out the year. Buzz around campus recently is about a Denim Drive taking place between October 16 and November 6. Many are curious as to what it is and what will be done with a collection of old denim. This drive is not what it looks like either. The old, worn denim will not be donated to those in need of clothing, but to a very different use.

Fuel of the Future

It seems as though we have been bombarded with new ideas and people finding ways to solve the fuel crisis that is affecting our world. These concerns have affected large car manufacturers as well as airlines. With the rising price of gasoline, people are trading in their luxury sport utility vehicles for smaller and more fuel-efficient cars. There are many people trying to fix this issue and encourage others to go green. Some individuals at Auburn University are making great strides alleviate our dependency on today’s gasoline.
Auburn University’s Alabama Center for Paper and Bioresource Engineering and the Masada Resource Group LLC have entered into an $1 million per year deal to evaluate and even produce alternative sources of fuel. (more…)
