Bootcamp Trains Students on Social Media

Laura Murray, a senior in public relations at Auburn University, went to UGA on Saturday, March 1, 2008, to learn more about social media.

The conference was open to students of all levels in public relations or related fields. While there were mostly students from UGA, many Auburn students attended the event.

The students were divided into teams and worked on a campaign for various clients to get practical experience. These type of events are great ways for students to know what to expect once they enter the workforce.

The Real World… and I Am Not Talking MTV

K

elly Mcdevitt shared her experience with me from her weekend in Atlanta, Georgia. Mcdevitt attended a Public Relations Conference titled “The Real World,” because the conference provides a taste of the real world!

This PR Collegiate Conference is a daylong event that brings together more than 200 college students from all over the Southeast and many other parts of the country. Seminars are held regarding professional development and interactive industry presentations. More than 200 Atlanta-based public relations professionals attend the event.
For Kelly, this was an excellent chance to meet top PR students and PR professionals for internships or entry-level positions.

Kelly is currently a senior majoring in Public Relations here at Auburn University.

History of the Auburn ‘War Eagle’ Fight Song

One of the most engaging aspects of the Auburn experience is the ceremonial singing of the Auburn ‘War Eagle’, which has been a school tradition since 1955.

The ‘War Eagle’ fight song was written by Robert Allen (composer) and Al Stillman (lyrics). Roy B. Sewell commissioned the song in 1953 as part of an attempt to motivate football coach ‘Shug’ Jordan’s up and coming football team. The thought behind the initiative was to usher in a new era of success for Auburn athletics’ by capturing the spirit of the Auburn fans through the Auburn fight song.

Officially the naming rights of the Auburn ‘War Eagle’ fight song jointly belong to Auburn University and the late Roy B. Sewell of the Sewell family. According to the Sewell family, Roy B. Sewell also helped compose the last few lines of lyrics, and the family still has the parchment roll with the handwritten changes along with the rights to the song in their possession.

Today, on behalf of the Sewell family heirs here is Harris Sewell Worley, a fourth generation Auburn Alumni and direct descendant of the Sewell family, with a direct account of the history of the Auburn ‘War Eagle’ fight song.

PR Students head to Atlanta for PR Conference

T

alk about an awesome experience. This past Friday there was a PR Conference held in Atlanta, Ga. for public relations students. Many students came from UGA, Alabama, Valdosta State and of course, Auburn.

The conference took place in Loudermilk Center located in the heart of Atlanta and the conference gave public relations students the opportunity to network and meet professional PR practitioners from all different companies that have offices in the Atlanta area. From Edelman, to Jackson Spalding, there were many practitioners there wanting to help students from all universities.

One of the Auburn students that attended the conference was Emily McGrath. McGrath is a senior about to graduate and attended the day long conference. Take a look at her video and what she tells you about the conference and what she took from the conference.
