College of Business- Making a Difference in the Community

Kaylan Hopson is a senior from Dallas, Texas majoring in Finance. Last April, Hopson was elected to the position of Secretary of Programming for the College of Business Council.

While serving as Secretary of Programming, Kaylan has had the opportunity to plan and execute a number of events, both college-related and philanthropic. For example, during the past two semester’s exam days, members of the College of Business council have passed out exam kits to students. These kits were filled with scantrons, pencils, waters, snacks, candy and even donuts. The College of Business Council has also hosted a “Town Hall Meeting” where students from the college can address their questions and concerns to College of Business Dean Paul Bobrowski.

The two main philanthropic events Hopson has helped plan and participate in are a school supplies drive and a blood drive. The school supplies drive took place in August, and supplies collected were donated to the Opelika Boys and Girls Club, Ms. Mary’s Daycare in Loachapoka and the Opelika Learning Center. The blood drive was held on Tuesday of last week and was very successful. Hopson said there were over 50 donors, and the blood was donated through Lifesouth to the East Alabama Medical Center.

Panhellenic Sororities Come Together to Sing and Dance for a Good Cause

Greek Sing is a tradition among Auburn University’s sixteen Panhellenic sororities that is held every year during spring semester. Throughout the semester the sororities prepare for the event by practicing hours on end to perfect their themed dancing and singing segment.

Each Panhellenic sorority competes in Greek Sing by participating in a song and dance competition that includes original themed costumes, props, and creative backdrops for appealing scenery. The collaboration of all sixteen sororities produces an exhilarating show every year. The groups are individually judged and awards are rewarded to the top three highest scoring sororities. In addition, there is a Spirit Award given for participation and a Presidents’ Choice award based on a vote of the sixteen chapter presidents.

Greek Sing is a great event that raises thousands of dollars annually which benefits the Habitat for Humanity Lee County chapter and unifies all the sororities together for a night of fun. Here is an interview with an Auburn Panhellenic member participating in Greek Sing on Tuesday, April 8, 2008.
